A town in Finland has implemented a sand battery, developed by Polar Night Energy, to transition away from fossil fuels in its heating network. Located in Pornainen, this innovative energy storage solution can store heat generated from renewable energy sources, effectively replacing natural gas and oil with reduced emissions by 70%. The sand battery, filled with crushed soapstone, heats to 600°C and can store energy for extended periods. It has the capacity to heat the town's homes and businesses, demonstrating a significant step towards sustainable energy solutions.
"This project is a powerful example that effective solutions for mitigating climate change do exist," said Liisa Naskali, COO at Polar Night Energy.
"Combustion is not a sustainable option for the climate or the environment," highlighting the necessity of innovative alternatives for heating.
"Of course, we alone cannot solve the whole problem of climate change, but we need different solutions, and our sand battery is one of them."
