Google is a 'bad actor' says People CEO, accusing the company of stealing content | TechCrunch
"Google has one crawler, which means they use the same crawler for their search, where they still send us traffic, as they do for their AI products, where they steal our content,"
"I'm not complaining. We've grown our audience. We've grown our revenue,"
"What is not right about this is: you cannot take our content to compete with us."
People, Inc., which operates more than 40 brands including People, Food & Wine, Travel & Leisure, and AllRecipes, reports that Google uses the same crawler for its search index and AI products. The shared crawler both sends referral traffic and harvests content for AI, contributing to a decline in Google Search referrals from around 65% to the high 20s over three years, and previously as high as 90%. The publisher contends that AI features take content and compete with publishers. The publisher is blocking nonpaying AI crawlers via Cloudflare to pressure AI companies into licensing agreements and has a content deal with OpenAI, labeled a 'good actor.'
