""If lidars/radars disagree with cameras," Musk asked on Twitter, "which one wins?""
""This sensor ambiguity causes increased, not decreased, risk," he concluded. "That's why Waymos can't drive on highways. We turned off radars in Teslas to increase safety.""
""A very high resolution radar would be better than pure vision, but such a radar does not exist," Musk wrote at the time."
Elon Musk has long rejected radar and lidar on Tesla vehicles, insisting camera-only vision yields safer autonomous driving by avoiding sensor contention. He argues that conflicting sensor inputs increase ambiguity and risk, and asserted that competitors relying on lidar and radar cannot drive on highways. Waymo has tested robotaxis on Phoenix highways since 2024 with a human safety driver. Tesla removed radar from production cars in May 2021 after years of reliance. Private messages revealed that Musk privately conceded that a very high-resolution radar would be superior to pure vision, creating a public-private contradiction.
