OpenAI Representatives Are Going to Critics' Houses With Threats and Demands
"It's a bit scary to know that the most valuable private company in the world has your address and has shown up and has questions for you,"
"They were asking for every former employee we had spoken to and what we said to them,"
"Every congressional office that we spoke to, every potential investor that we spoke to."
"They wanted every single text message and document that we had that in any way related to OpenAI's restructuring,"
OpenAI served subpoenas on at least seven nonprofits that had criticized the company, requesting documents, communications, and contacts. Tyler Johnston, founder of The Midas Project, experienced OpenAI representatives appearing at his home seeking records of former employees, congressional offices, potential investors, and related text messages and documents. The subpoenas coincided with OpenAI's restructuring into a for-profit public benefit corporation and an ongoing lawsuit involving Elon Musk and disputes with Microsoft over investments and the company's direction. OpenAI alleged some critics were funded by Musk, and the subpoenas arrived while companies opposed a California bill to limit minors' access to AI models.
