OpenAI's open model is delayed | TechCrunch
Briefly

OpenAI's CEO Sam Altman announced a delay in the release of the company's first open model in years, now expected later this summer rather than June. The team has made unexpected advancements, prompting the decision for a more thorough development process. Originally targeting an early summer release to compete with rising alternatives like Mistral's Magistral and Qwen's hybrid models, OpenAI is also considering adding complex features that could strengthen its model's performance, though it's unclear which will be included in the final version.
We are going to take a little more time with our open-weights model, i.e. expect it later this summer but not June. Our research team did something unexpected and quite amazing and we think it will be very very worth the wait, but needs a bit longer.
OpenAI aims for its open model to top the performance of other open reasoning models, such as DeepSeek's R1.
