BronxArtSpace and the Fight for Affordable Creativity in NYC
""We have a small but powerful ecosystem here: exhibition spaces, artist studios, and people who are willing to work with each other," said Sabine Schumacher, director of BronxArtSpace in Hunts Point."
""The challenge will be the political climate and if we get enough funding.""
""There is an empty space next door. Let's do some art here.""
BronxArtSpace operates on Spofford Avenue in Hunts Point, providing exhibition spaces, studios, and artist residencies in one of New York City's poorest neighborhoods. The nonprofit began in 2010 when local artists Linda Cunningham and Mitsu Hadeishi transformed an unused ground-floor space into a guerrilla art venue without rent or formal structure. Growing interest led to formal organization, grant applications, and a community role that ensures at least 45 percent of exhibiting artists are Bronx-based. Nearby Mott Haven has attracted artists seeking affordable studios, but that influx raises concerns about neighborhood gentrification. Political climate and funding availability pose ongoing challenges.
