In 'The Lion King,' 3 cheers for the villain * Oregon ArtsWatch
"From his own childhood, Hargrave said, he has a lot of experience to draw on to relate to Scar's feeling of being "second best," and being "the villain" doesn't trouble him too much. Each night he and actors playing Zazu and Rafiki gather before the show, go through their makeup and puppetry sessions, and help each other get into their roles. "It's ritualistic that drops you right into character," Hargrave said."
""It's amazing to me how every night feels so different. When you travel one place to the next, the backstage routine has to be so scientific. All audiences have their own energy and vocal responses, especially with the 'Circle of Life' opening. That's energy organically created and tells us, 'This will be super exciting and different.'" The Lion King, presented by Broadway in Portland, stages in Portland Sept. 17-28 at Keller Auditorium, and it'll bring back memories for Hargrave."
Peter Hargrave has surpassed 1,000 performances as Scar in the Broadway touring production of Disney's The Lion King. He draws on childhood experiences to relate to Scar's feeling of being 'second best' and is undaunted by playing the villain. Each night Hargrave and fellow actors for Zazu and Rafiki gather for makeup and puppetry sessions that form a ritual to put them into character. Hargrave notes that every audience brings different energy, especially during the 'Circle of Life' opening. The touring show stages in Portland Sept. 17-28 at Keller Auditorium. A January 2024 ice storm shortened a planned four-week run in Portland, leaving cast members stuck and adapting schedules.
