The 10,060-square-meter building was designed by British practice Chapman Taylor and sits at the city's edge with the Tian Shan mountains rising behind it. The design pairs Jura limestone walls with aluminum-clad L-shaped wings and features a central glazed corridor called Art Street that draws natural light into the interior and frames mountain views. Interior spaces move from high, quiet galleries to intimate rooms and include a multifunctional auditorium, creative studios, and a café opening onto landscaped gardens with commissioned sculptures. Entrepreneur and philanthropist Nurlan Smagulov gifted more than seven hundred works that will ultimately belong to the city. The inaugural exhibits include a sweeping retrospective titled 'I Understand Everything' by Almagul Menlibayeva that traces four decades of experimentation.
