Museum of Fine Arts Boston laid off 33 workers, a 6.3% staff reduction, with the cuts taking effect on Friday. The layoffs affect 16 union members and span roles from curatorial to operations to high-level management; 23 vacancies were also eliminated. Museum leadership cited a projected $13 million deficit and noted that salaries and benefits comprise 55% of the annual budget, estimating the reductions will save about $5.4 million. The institution plans to meet with the union for preliminary bargaining. The museum also intends to sell a plot of land in Hopkinton previously intended for a collection center.
