The University of Texas is making a $13.5 million down payment to cover Interstate 35 from 15th Street to Dean Keeton, utilizing state funds to widen and lower the highway for deck plaza construction.
The deck plazas will span 17 acres above the highway, offering space for parks, fountains, trees, or buildings to mask the highway trench, with estimated costs of $394 million plus additional yearly maintenance expenses.
University of Texas Regents approved the funding agreement with TxDOT in a public vote after private discussions, contrasting with the city of Austin's more transparent approach to capping plans.
City capping projects will extend from Cesar Chavez to Seventh Street, from 11th to 12th Street, and from 38th 1/2 Street almost to Airport Boulevard.
