Michigan Ends Use of Private Security to Surveil Students
Briefly

The University of Michigan has terminated its contracts with private security firms after reports surfaced of their inappropriate surveillance and harassment of pro-Palestinian student groups. The interim president condemned the actions as unethical, particularly following incidents where students were followed and harassed by individuals posing as plainclothes security. This decision follows past protests on campus related to pro-Palestinian sentiments, highlighting a commitment to uphold university values that prohibit targeting students based on beliefs or affiliations, ensuring a safer environment moving forward.
"We recently learned that an employee of one of our security contractors has acted in ways that go against our values and directives," Michigan interim president Domenico Grasso wrote.
"These individuals were intended to help us keep watch over our campus and enable us to respond quickly to emergencies. However, we are clear: no individual or group should ever be targeted for their beliefs or affiliations."
