In the retrial of Karen Read for the alleged murder of John O'Keefe, closing arguments are set to begin after eight weeks of testimony. The defense, led by attorney David Yannetti, contends there’s no substantial evidence supporting the claim that O'Keefe was struck by Read's SUV, backed by biomechanics expert Andrew Rentschler's testimony. The prosecution asserts that Read deliberately hit O'Keefe while under the influence. Judge Beverly Cannone has denied a defense motion for a not guilty ruling, stating the defense did not sufficiently prove any alternate theories of the crime.
According to Rentschler, the abrasions on John O'Keefe's right arm were inconsistent with striking Read's taillight. 'I don't think his arm was even impacted by the car,' Rentschler opined Wednesday.
Defense attorney David Yannetti renewed Read's request for a required finding of not guilty, arguing that the prosecutors produced no witnesses who could say O'Keefe's injuries were consistent with a motor vehicle collision.
Assistant District Attorney Adam Lally argued that defense witnesses offered conflicting testimony and showed 'bias and advocacy.' Judge Cannone ultimately denied the defense request.
