At Bar Nico, a Williamsburg pub finds its groove through food, community and rock 'n' roll * Brooklyn Paper
"We're not a wine bar. We're not a cocktail bar. You don't need a reservation. You just show up, like your local back home."
"I bartended at Pencil Factory for about four years. When it closed, it felt like a huge loss - not just a bar, but a community space."
"What a privilege to help create a new space where people can come back together. It's community-driven, community-led. By the people, for the people."
Bar Nico opened less than a year ago in the former Philomena's space on a busy Williamsburg stretch and functions as a neighborhood pub. The venue blends Australian pub sensibilities with Italian comfort food and emphasizes a Brooklyn-style community atmosphere, producing a lived-in rather than curated feel. Founders include Australian natives Callum and Morgan Sigg, Justin Deering, and minority partner Nati Rabinowitz. Rabinowitz manages events, social media, and ordering while bartending. The kitchen launched with a single daily low-priced dish and now centers on pastas and lasagna. The bar operates without reservations and fosters regular gatherings.
