The New York City Department of Transportation plans to implement a dedicated bus lane on Flatbush Avenue to address current challenges faced by nearly 70,000 daily riders, who experience extremely slow bus speeds. The proposal, which includes center-running bus lanes and concrete bus boarding islands, aims to enhance safety for pedestrians and provide a better transit experience. Additionally, the adjustments to curb regulations are designed to accommodate local businesses, acknowledging that a significant portion of residents in the area rely on public transportation.
Right now, Flatbush Avenue above Prospect Park doesn't work for anyone: almost 70,000 daily bus riders are stuck waiting too long for slow buses, drivers are caught in a mess of traffic, and pedestrians are left crossing intersections clogged with vehicles. Our proposal would address each of these issues and create a world-class, welcoming corridor for everyone.
The proposal will also adjust curb regulations to better support local businesses' delivery needs, along with new pedestrian spaces to improve traffic safety and reduce pedestrian crossing times.
