PREMIUM Rare, ancient 'Books of the Dead', part of Brooklyn Museum's Egyptian collection, restored for viewing for the first time
"Gilded papyri are incredibly rare. Having one that is complete and of Memphite origin makes it even more extraordinary,"
"Very few scholars in the field of Book of the Dead studies have had the pleasure of seeing even a fragmentary gilded manuscript. We're so excited to bring this complete masterpiece to Brooklyn Museum audiences."
"Private sector support for art conservation helps ensure that vulnerable artwork and archaeological pieces like Book of the Dead are preserved for future generations. Newly restored with Bank of America Art Conservation Project funding, Book of the Dead will offer Brooklyn Museum visitors the opportunity to experience ancient Egyptian funerary customs in a new light."
An almost complete Book of the Dead contains nearly all 162 spells from the most extensive manuscripts and is composed largely in the Memphite style of Lower Egypt, identifiable by hieratic script and double outlines around text columns and vignettes. Underdrawings appear beneath some illustrations, and gilding with traces of yellow orpiment remains. Blank pages at both the beginning and end confirm completeness. Conservation and curatorial work identified the owner as Ankhmerwer son of Taneferher. Gilded papyri are extremely rare, and a complete Memphite example is exceptional. Bank of America Art Conservation Project funding enabled restoration and supports conservation grants since 2010.
