The colon cancer mortality rate among individuals under 55 has risen by 1% annually since the mid-2000s, with diagnoses under 50 projected to double by 2030. While the causes are debated, diet may play a crucial role in prevention. Gastroenterologist Joseph Salhab highlighted studies showing that fruits like watermelon, apples, and kiwis can significantly lower colon cancer risk. For instance, watermelon has a 26% risk reduction due to its antioxidants, while apples and kiwis lower risks by 25% and 13%, respectively. These fruits not only combat cancer but also promote overall health.
Salhab notes that kiwis are an "excellent source of fiber, aiding in digestive health," which is probably why they're linked to a 13% reduction in colon cancer risk.
Apples are "high in fiber, which promotes healthy bowel movements and may reduce exposure of the colon to carcinogens" and they "contain polyphenols, which have antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects."
