The Eames Institute has acquired the former Birkenstock campus in Novato for $36 million, planning to establish an art and design museum there. The 88.5-acre site features a 32,000-square-foot office building and a distinctive 134,000-square-foot warehouse, originally constructed for McGraw-Hill in 1964. The warehouse has been a visual landmark for drivers on Highway 101. Currently, the Eames Institute operates in Richmond, hosting tours of its extensive collection of over 40,000 artifacts related to the influential design duo, Ray and Charles Eames.
