Microsoft has announced that its preview of hotpatching for on-prem Windows Server 2025 will transition to a paid subscription service costing $1.50 per core per month starting July. Hotpatching enables software updates to be applied without rebooting, thus minimizing downtime and facilitating easier security updates. Previously available for Azure environments, this functionality is now extending to Windows Server 2025 Standard and Datacenter editions, improving change control and allowing administrators to better manage updates with fewer interruptions.
Hotpatching allows software updates to be applied without requiring a reboot, making it easier for admins to implement security updates without downtime.
This feature will be a game changer; simpler change control, shorter patch windows, easier orchestration, and you may finally get to see your family on the weekends.
Microsoft's new subscription service for hotpatching will cost $1.50/core/month, delivering eight hotpatches each year, streamlining the update process.
In August 2024, Microsoft previewed hotpatching for Windows Server 2025, allowing updates on-premises and in hybrid environments managed with Arc.
