The Chinese state is thought to be accused of two or three attempts to attack Ministry of Defence (MoD) employees, targeting the payroll system with personal information like names and bank details.
China's foreign ministry stated it 'firmly opposes and fights all forms of cyber attacks' and 'rejects the use of this issue politically to smear other countries'.
Conservative MP Tobias Ellwood suggested that China may have been targeting financially vulnerable UK MoD employees to coerce them in exchange for cash.
