How Sweden wants to make it easier to change employers on a work permit
Briefly

Sweden is abolishing the requirement for work permit holders to reapply for a new permit when changing employers during the first two years. This change, effective May 21, 2026, aligns with new EU regulations aimed at easing the process for third country citizens. Affected individuals will only need to inform the Migration Agency of their job switch, which will confirm that the new position meets permit criteria. Additionally, the rules for trial periods will be amended to allow longer permits, provided the holder maintains communication about employment status.
Currently, an applicant's first two-year work permit is tied to a specific employer and a specific role, whereas work permits after two years are tied to a specific role only.
Instead of applying for a new permit, applicants would simply need to inform the Migration Agency of their change of employer, although failure to do this could lead to their work permit being withdrawn.
