TikTok gets a hefty fine in the EU for transferring user data to China
Briefly

TikTok has been fined €530 million in Ireland for violating GDPR regulations due to improper transfer of user data from the European Economic Area to China. The Data Protection Commission found that TikTok did not ensure that EEA users' personal data received adequate protection once transferred outside the EU. The company must bring its data processing into compliance within six months, or face suspended data transfers. Deputy Commissioner Graham Doyle emphasized the importance of maintaining EU-level data protection standards in international transfers.
The GDPR requires that the high level of protection provided within the European Union continues where personal data is transferred to other countries. TikTok's personal data transfers to China infringed the GDPR.
TikTok initially said it did not store EEA user data on servers located in China, but last month it informed the DPC of an issue found in February regarding 'limited EEA user data' stored there.
