This Indigenous Language Survived Russian Occupation. Can It Survive YouTube?
""Kyrgyz children are algorithmically constructed as audiences for Russian content. There is no good way to be a Kyrgyz-speaking kid on YouTube.""
"Despite a strong desire for Kyrgyz-language content, searches for popular children's interests often yield little to no results in Kyrgyz."
Research indicates that YouTube significantly prioritizes Russian-language content over Kyrgyz-language videos, particularly in children's programming. Despite a strong interest in Kyrgyz content, searches for popular children's topics yield minimal results in Kyrgyz. Simulated user behavior showed that even after engaging with Kyrgyz-language videos, users received fewer recommendations in Kyrgyz than those with no language preference. This trend raises concerns about the cultural impact on Kyrgyz children, as they are increasingly exposed to Russian media instead of their indigenous language.
