In response to Russia's intensified missile and drone assaults, Ukraine's President Zelenskyy announced the withdrawal from the Ottawa Convention against anti-personnel mines. This move reflects Ukraine's position concerning Russia's use of such mines during the conflict. Zelenskyy also posthumously awarded the 'Hero of Ukraine' title to pilot Maksym Ustymenko, who died in action while defending against a massive Russian attack. He managed to shoot down several air targets but tragically could not eject from his crippled jet before crashing.
Zelenskyy has long cited Russia's use of the deadly mines for Ukraine's desire to exit the pact, which has been signed by more than 160 countries.
This is the trademark of Russian killers -- to destroy life by any means at their disposal.
The pilot used the entire array of onboard weapons and shot down seven air targets.
I have just signed a decree awarding the title of Hero of Ukraine to Maksym Ustymenko -- a Ukrainian pilot and one of our very best.
