Resident Evil Movie Will Keep The Game World "Intact," Says Director
"It's an entirely original story,"
"When you watch it, you'll be like, 'This is very Zach.' It's just [that] it takes place in the Resident Evil world. I don't think fans of the games are gonna be bummed. ... I respect the games enough where I'm gonna like tell a Resident Evil story in the Resident Evil canon that still leaves everything they love intact from the games, you know what I mean?"
"[Abrams is] so right for the role in Resident Evil."
The upcoming Resident Evil film is an original story set squarely within the Resident Evil game universe and will not use established game protagonists such as Leon Kennedy. The film aims to preserve core franchise elements and remain consistent with Resident Evil canon. Austin Abrams has a leading role in the project, and Paul Walter Hauser reportedly joined the cast. Production will begin in October in Prague. The film is scheduled to hit theaters on September 18, 2026. Capcom will mark the franchise's 30th anniversary with Resident Evil 9: Requiem in February 2026 and Resident Evil ports for Switch 2.
