"His great-grandfather, William Grant, built Glenfiddich from scratch in the 1880s. Literally. At 47 years old, Grant assembled a cadre of workers, some of whom included his nine children. Stone was hauled from nearby hills, second-hand stills were acquired and assembled. Construction dragged into a brutally harsh winter, yet Grant and his clan got it over the finish line, with the first spirits flowing from the stills by Christmas Day in 1887."
"For the prior seven decades, Glendfiddich's playbook was a facsimile of every other Highlands distillery: Make whisky for blenders, sell in bulk, and remain largely anonymous. While Grant Gordon's new bearing wasn't a desperate Hail MaryWilliam Grant & Sons already had a substantial, diversified business, with other distilleries, including Balvenieit was a bold, contrarian move. He launched Glenfiddich Straight Malt, with a base of eight-year whisky vatted with 12- and 13-year casks."
Sandy Grant Gordon began selling single-malt Scotch in 1963 when single malts were under one percent of the market. He prioritized distinctive distillery character over blended consistency and believed consumers would pay premium for unique flavors. Glenfiddich originated with William Grant building the distillery in 1887 with family labor and second-hand stills. For decades Glenfiddich produced whisky for blenders and remained anonymous. Grant Gordon launched Glenfiddich Straight Malt, vatted from eight-, twelve-, and thirteen-year casks, packaged in a triangular bottle to stand out. The strategy produced rapid success: by 1970 Glenfiddich sold 100,000 cases and led single-malt sales worldwide.
