Google has decided not to introduce new Nest Thermostats in Europe, citing the region's unique heating system requirements as a challenge. While existing models will remain functional and receive updates until supplies last, new customers will need to seek third-party alternatives. Additionally, software support for some older Nest devices will be discontinued starting in 2025. To offset this decision, Google is offering discounts on new thermostat models for affected customers in the US and Canada, but this move raises concerns about its long-term commitment to Nest products.
"Heating systems in Europe are unique and have a variety of hardware and software requirements that make it challenging to build for the diverse set of homes," Google says.
While Google's new fourth-generation Nest Learning Thermostat launched in 2024, it will not be available in Europe due to unique heating system requirements.
As a consolation, Google is offering $130 off a new fourth-generation Nest Thermostat to affected customers in the US and $160 off for customers in Canada.
Most people don't purchase a thermostat and expect it to have an expiration date, raising skepticism about Google's ongoing commitment to its Nest products.
