Waymo begins service at SFO, but not at the terminals
"Waymo and the airport announced on Thursday that the company is finally approved to open up its ride-hailing service. Its autonomous cars, though, won't be driving into the Uber and Lyft zones in the centrally located Domestic Garage. Instead, Waymo riders will be picked up and dropped off at the Rental Car Center a few train stops, or roughly 10 minutes, from the terminals."
"The approval is a huge win for Waymo, which has dramatically expanded its service radius in the Bay Area over the past couple of years without yet gaining full access to the ride-hailing jewel that is SFO. Airports are extremely popular among ride-hailing customers; in late 2023, Uber and Lyft were running around 800,000 trips a month to and from SFO, SFGATE reported. The only other Bay Area airport to have Waymo service is San Jose Mineta International Airport."
Waymo received approval to operate autonomous ride-hailing service at San Francisco International Airport with pickups and drop-offs at the Rental Car Center, a few AirTrain stops or roughly 10 minutes from the terminals. Autonomous cars will not drive into the Uber and Lyft zones in the centrally located Domestic Garage. The approval follows a multi-stage pilot launched in September 2025 that tested cars with human drivers and then offered limited passenger rides. Waymo launched service for some riders and plans to expand access and add additional SFO locations and terminals in coming months. Major events like the Super Bowl and FIFA World Cup matches are factors in service planning.
