"They called me about a year ago and asked if I would like to be an executive producer, which meant basically put my name on it and help promote it. It was a no-brainer, just given my passion for the issue. And then after watching the film, I was just blown away by how beautiful it was and poignant it was. It was an easy decision."
"What mattered to me right away was how the film listens to families. It gives them room to speak about their children without exploiting their stories into politics or spectacle. There's a dignity in that choice, which is difficult to find in the way our country usually talks about gun violence."
Steve Kerr, Golden State Warriors coach and nine-time NBA champion, became an Oscar winner as executive producer of the documentary short 'All the Empty Rooms.' The 35-minute film follows broadcast journalist Steve Hartman and photographer Lou Bopp as they document families who have memorialized the bedrooms of children killed in mass shootings. Kerr, whose father was assassinated in 1984, has consistently advocated for gun regulation. Though he did not participate in the film's production, Kerr enthusiastically joined the project when approached about a year ago. He promoted the film through Netflix screenings and wrote an op-ed praising how the documentary respectfully tells families' stories with dignity rather than exploiting them for political purposes.
