Anne Neuberger, former deputy national security adviser, warned at the AI Expo that a major cyberattack could cause significant failures in US critical infrastructure. She cited a lack of resilience due to outdated technology and workforce reductions under the Trump administration, undermining cybersecurity efforts. Neuberger advocated for increased AI implementation to bolster defenses, particularly in evaluating legacy systems and using digital twinning. She argued that despite job cuts, this is a pivotal opportunity to reshape national cyberdefense strategies to better protect vital systems.
Since it was an AI conference, Neuberger naturally pushed for the introduction of more AI to secure critical infrastructure. She described such systems as being better able to evaluate legacy systems to discover weak points.
It's never a good time to lose talented cyber defenders; it's also an opportunity to say... let's approach national cyberdefense differently with a more targeted approach, using AI to close the holes in the most critical infrastructure.
