Mother appears in court charged with murder of 18-day-old baby girl in Westminster
"At this stage, we believe the incident occurred within a domestic context, but we are appealing for anybody with information to come forward. The death of an infant is always an extremely tragic occurrence, and officers are making urgent enquiries around the circumstances."
"This case has to be dealt with at the higher court and you will be appearing at the Central Criminal Court in two days' time which is March 18. It is in custody by reason of the nature of the allegations. Bail does not arise in this court."
Zahira Byjaouane, 43, appeared at Westminster Magistrates' Court charged with murdering her 18-day-old daughter who fell from a height at a building in Horseferry Road, Westminster. The infant was hospitalized but died from injuries sustained in the fall. The case was deemed too serious for magistrates' court and was transferred to the Old Bailey, where Byjaouane is scheduled to appear on March 18. She remains in custody. Detectives from the Met's Specialist Crime Command are investigating, believing the incident occurred within a domestic context. Flowers and stuffed animals were left at the site as tributes to the deceased infant.
