In March 2021, British-Sri Lankan chef Cynthia Shanmugalingam quarantined in Sri Lanka, where she began drafting her cookbook, 'Rambutan.' During her stay, she met Joe Lenora, leading to their marriage in January. They chose Lunuganga, the former residence of architect Geoffrey Bawa, as their wedding venue, known for its unique Tropical Modernism style. The property operates as a hotel today, retaining its intimate atmosphere and personal touches reflective of Bawa's design philosophy.
Bawa lived and worked on the former rubber plantation, in the beach town of Bentota, for nearly 40 years before his death in 2003, when its care was taken over by a group of his close friends now known as the Geoffrey Bawa and Lunuganga Trust.
Shanmugalingam reflects on the intimate, personal quality of Lunuganga, emphasizing its unique character with different chairs and tables that reflect Bawa's personal tastes.
