Red Sox CBO Craig Breslow reportedly prioritizing finding a GM this offseason
"The Red Sox' 2025 season is still ongoing, but the team's already making some plans for 2026. Well, at least from a front office standpoint. Red Sox chief baseball officer Craig Breslow has prioritized trying to find a general manager who'll serve as a second-in-command this offseason, WEEI's Rob Bradford reported. The general manager position has been vacant since Breslow was hired to run the Red Sox' baseball operations ahead of the 2024 season."
"However, the general manager position for the Red Sox has had a lesser influence in recent years compared to the early seasons of John Henry's ownership. Their last two general managers, Mike Hazen and Brian O'Halloran, were second-in-command to Dave Dombrowski and Chaim Bloom, respectively. O'Halloran was removed as the team's general manager when Bloom was fired in September 2023. But he wound up getting reassigned in the Red Sox' front office, becoming their executive vice president of baseball operations."
"That reassignment took place before Breslow ran an audit of the Red Sox' front office in 2024, though. Breslow's audit reportedly caused the team to relieve several longtime employees of their duties, while some others wound up resigning. As there have been a lot of changes to the Red Sox' front office, the team employs a lot of assistant general managers, with each feasibly being a possible candidate to become the next general manager."
Craig Breslow has prioritized adding a general manager this offseason to act as a second-in-command after becoming chief baseball officer. The general manager role has been vacant since Breslow took over baseball operations ahead of 2024 and has carried less influence compared with earlier John Henry-era seasons. Mike Hazen and Brian O'Halloran previously served as second-in-command to their respective superiors; O'Halloran was reassigned as executive vice president of baseball operations after Bloom's firing. Breslow's 2024 audit led to several longtime employees leaving, and multiple assistant general managers are now plausible GM candidates.
