President Trump's administration has shown increased hostility towards the press compared to its predecessor. Experts express concern over a systematic attack on ethical journalists, viewing the actions as a strategy aimed at suppressing dissent and manipulating media narratives. Caroline Hendrie of the Society of Professional Journalists argues that this is an assault on transparency and accountability, while Gabriel Kahn warns that the current press attacks are unprecedented in severity. These developments raise alarms about the future of free press in America.
"What stands out to me is that this is a concerted, multipronged campaign against ethical journalists and the independent press," says Caroline Hendrie, executive director of the Society of Professional Journalists.
"They want to delegitimize anyone who contradicts his narrative or the narrative of the administration," says Hendrie.
"Using the levers of government to not only influence coverage but also punish news outlets raises more than red flags," Hendrie adds.
"It's important to think of the attack on the press as only one part of the issue," says Gabriel Kahn of USC Annenberg School for Journalism.
