Researchers discovered that unique breathing patterns can serve as identifiers for individuals, correlating with physical traits like BMI as well as mental health indicators such as depression and anxiety. Utilizing a custom device, 24 parameters related to breathing were monitored in 97 people over 24 hours. The algorithm trained on this data was able to accurately identify participants even after long intervals. This approach indicates that breathing could provide insights into both personal identification and broader health diagnostics.

The researchers developed a custom, wearable device that records airflow through each of a person's nostrils.
