Hawaii faces flash flooding, blizzard conditions and landslides with more rain to come
"Flash flooding has been a major problem in recent days in places such as Maui, Molokai and the Big Island, where rain had been falling between 1 and 2in (2.5 and 5cm) an hour overnight, according to the Hawaii emergency management agency."
"Richard Bissen, the Maui county mayor, said in a social media post late Saturday that some areas of Maui had received more than 20in (51cm) of rain in the previous 24 hours. We're seeing flooding, landslides, sinkholes, debris and downed power lines across the county, he said."
"PowerOutage.us, which tracks outages nationwide, reported more than 35,000 electric customers in Hawaii without power as of midday Sunday. Winds this strong can make driving and walking dangerous. The winds can forcefully open doors and damage hinges or slam doors shut, possibly causing injuries."
Hawaii experienced severe weather on Sunday with continued rainfall causing significant damage across multiple islands including Maui, Molokai, and the Big Island. Rain fell at rates of 1-2 inches per hour overnight, with some Maui areas receiving over 20 inches in 24 hours. The storm triggered flash flooding, landslides, sinkholes, and downed power lines. Over 35,000 customers lost power. Flood watches and warnings remained in effect through Sunday night, with dangerous wind conditions posing risks to residents. National Guard and fire department personnel conducted multiple water rescues. While the worst weather passed, authorities warned of continued hazards including collapsed roads and at least one home washing away.
