The kindness of strangers: out of the blue, an older woman handed me a well-thumbed book
Briefly

A person set resolutions to improve physically and mentally, focusing on regular exercise and reading. After a setback with exercise, the reading goal was successful. During a train ride, an elderly woman gifted a book, The Man Who Was Thursday, without expectation. This act of kindness left a lasting impression and the book became a favorite. Although the individual did not reach the goal of reading a book a week, completing about 30 books in one year was a notable achievement.
On a long train trip from Sydney to Melbourne, an older couple handed me a well-thumbed copy of The Man Who Was Thursday by GK Chesterton without saying a word.
What makes the memory even fonder is that The Man Who Was Thursday went on to become one of my favourite books; it now has pride of place on my bookshelf.
The gesture was completely out of the blue, a simple, quiet act of kindness for the sake of it, with no expectation or pretext.
Though I didn't achieve my goal of reading a book a week, I read about 30 books that year, which was far more than I had ever read before.
