San Jose's City Council approved Mayor Matt Mahan's March budget message in an 8-3 vote, establishing the framework for the city's budget deliberations. Three councilmembers—Domingo Candelas, Pamela Campos, and Bien Doan—dissented, opposing the rejection of additional proposals aimed at addressing the affordability crisis. These rejected measures included expanded child care services, homelessness prevention initiatives, and a $500,000 boost for the blight reduction program. Candelas argued these priorities align with resident concerns and community values despite fiscal constraints. The core budget focuses on reducing homelessness, enhancing public safety, improving housing affordability, and supporting economic growth. The final budget vote is scheduled for June 16.
