Mayor Eric Adams announced the development of 1,100 new homes in Coney Island, comprising affordable and supportive housing projects including Coney Landing and Coney Island Phase 3. The city is also seeking developers for additional units on Surf Avenue. Adams emphasized the importance of building housing to lower rents and pointed to a historical reluctance from developers due to inadequate infrastructure. The revitalization effort, which includes $42 million for sports center renovations, is expected to be completed within three years. Some candidates advocate for a rent freeze to maintain affordability amid these initiatives.
We have broken records on building more and more housing. That is how you drive down rent, by building more housing, not making idle promises that you can't live up to.
I think Coney Island is a wonderful place to live. I remember as borough president, we saw many of the developers wouldn't develop because the infrastructure was not built out.
