Protective platform edge barriers have been installed at 56 subway stations in New York City as part of a safety initiative directed by Gov. Kathy Hochul. The Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) aims to install barriers at over 100 stations by the end of 2025. Alongside the barriers, LED lighting upgrades are taking place, with plans to convert all 472 stations before 2026. Subway crime has reportedly decreased, and surveys indicate strong public support for the barrier installation, especially among older riders.
New Yorkers' safety will always be my number one priority, and customers need to both feel and be secure every time they ride the subway.
Under Gov. Hochul's leadership, we're making investments to ensure that our system not only is safe but - equally important - feels safe to riders.
