Judge Debra Young, appointed as the statewide coordinating judge for problem-solving courts, reflects on her unique journey into law influenced by her brother's developmental disabilities. Initially steering away from the legal profession, her work in medical research ignited her curiosity about Albany Law School. Young’s personal history guides her empathetic treatment of individuals in recovery court, aiming to treat them as she would want her brother to be treated. Her belief in law as a helping profession shapes her mission to impact lives positively through problem-solving courts, emphasizing rehabilitation over punishment.
When I sit in court and I'm talking to people that participate I can just see my brother in a lot of these people, and in a lot of their struggles and challenges.
That's sort of what got me into the law to begin with. I said, If I couldn't be a doctor and help people that way, maybe I could do it in the law.
