New York City is revamping the rental process for vacated affordable apartments, allowing landlords to advertise these units publicly and accept applications directly from prospective tenants. Starting May 1, 2023, for one year, the city's housing department will waive bureaucratic rules to expedite tenant placement, addressing previously vacant affordable apartments. Eligible applicants can apply in a first-come, first-served manner rather than the traditional housing lottery system. The initiative aims to decrease red tape and expedite access to needed housing resources.
We are rolling out regularly, and especially right now, a whole suite of changes and updates to make the entire process of getting into affordable housing easier and faster.
The new process, which also applies to subsidized properties for sale through the lottery, is meant to remove red tape that's led to hundreds of affordable apartments sitting vacant for months.
