Chad Houser founded Cafe Momentum in 2015 in Downtown Dallas to create positive change by employing and educating formerly incarcerated youth in the juvenile justice system. The program aims to equip them with essential life skills such as conflict management and financial literacy. Houser recently received the James Beard Award for Humanitarian of the Year, acknowledging his work in the community. He reflects on his nomination experience and the impact Cafe Momentum has had on over 1,000 young individuals, generating career paths in hospitality across several cities.
I knew several months back that I was nominated, which I thought was cute and harmless. After hearing I was a finalist, the excitement grew.
I was like, 'Tap the brakes, friend. I'm sure it's a courtesy call to say, 'You were one of the finalists. Congratulations.''
The fact that people at the James Beard Foundation know my name is beyond an honor. It’s an incredible recognition for the work we’re doing.
Cafe Momentum has provided over 1,000 kids from the juvenile justice system with a chance to gain skills and find career opportunities.
