"After more than two decades of building and leading this restaurant, I've decided to step away and allow our extraordinary leaders to now guide the restaurant into its next chapter. I have also resigned from the board of MAD, the nonprofit organization I founded in 2011."
"Former Noma employees allege that between 2009 and 2017—when Noma's Copenhagen restaurant was building a reputation for innovative dishes using native Scandinavian ingredients—the chef would punch members of the staff, jab them with kitchen utensils, and push them up against the wall in anger."
"This incident shows that how founders treat their employees is critical for maintaining a positive brand reputation. Unlike when the reported abuses took place, workers now have social media platforms to hold business owners accountable for their actions."
Chef René Redzepi resigned from his position at Noma, the world-renowned restaurant, following allegations of employee abuse reported by The New York Times. Former employee Jason Ignacio White gathered workplace abuse allegations from other former Noma staff members and posted them on Instagram, receiving over 17 million views. The allegations describe incidents between 2009 and 2017 where Redzepi allegedly punched staff members, jabbed them with kitchen utensils, and pushed them against walls in anger. The controversy led to corporate sponsors withdrawing support from Noma's Los Angeles pop-up event, which was also attended by protesters. Redzepi announced his resignation on Instagram, stating he would step away to allow other leaders to guide the restaurant forward and also resigned from the board of MAD, the nonprofit organization he founded.
