New York City allows Waymo to test autonomous vehicles in Manhattan and Brooklyn
"pleased to have reached this next step in New York City."
"presents some of the most challenging urban street environments"
"as we continue to implement responsible innovation, we will always prioritize street safety."
New York City will allow Waymo to test up to eight autonomous vehicles in Manhattan and downtown Brooklyn through late September. The vehicles will not pick up passengers because local rules currently prohibit passenger service during tests. Each vehicle must have a test vehicle operator behind the wheel while operating on city streets. Waymo already operates robotaxis in Austin, Phoenix, San Francisco, Los Angeles, and Atlanta. City officials established safety requirements last year for autonomous vehicle testing, noting the city "presents some of the most challenging urban street environments" for these systems. Mayor Eric Adams emphasized prioritizing street safety while implementing responsible innovation.
