Air de Paris announced its withdrawal from Art Basel over a disagreement about stand assignments, describing the situation as unfair and brutal. The gallery's co-founders publicly shared their concerns, highlighting dissatisfaction with how their space was chosen. In response, Art Basel's director, Vincenzo de Bellis, clarified that placement rules allow for such decisions and that many galleries had their stands moved for aesthetic and logistical reasons, including the introduction of a new section, Premiere. The tension underscores complexities in gallery placement at major art fairs.
The space they refused was imposed on the gallery... They called the process 'brutal and unfair', adding: 'We cannot accept this treatment and feel obliged to withdraw.'
We know and respect that placement is an important thing for our exhibitors... At the same time, it's outlined in our rules and regulations that we can do this.
Apart from Air de Paris, De Bellis says that 58 galleries in total... had their stands moved. One of the main reasons is the launch of Premiere.
Aesthetics is a very important factor in deciding where a gallery will be placed. Galleries evolve over time and we follow those changes.
