Fraudsters use AI to try and swindle $2,800 from missing dog's family
""We go from elation that we found him to just dread that oh my gosh he's dying somewhere to okay great, he needs emergency surgery," Bill Cosens told Fox 35 Orlando."
""This isn't Archer,' Mr Cosens said. 'This is AI. It isn't obvious when you're distraught.""
""The surgery would cost $2,746 and I could pay by a variety of different methods. When I mentioned cash, the person emailed me a barcode I could use to pay at CVS.""
""Be careful of people preying on those worried about their lost pets!""
The Cousens family from Florida was targeted by scammers who used AI to fabricate images of their missing dog, Archer, supposedly needing emergency surgery. After posting about Archer's disappearance on Facebook, they received a call claiming he had been hit by a car and required costly surgery. Discrepancies in the images, including outdated X-rays and altered fur, raised suspicions. The address given for the veterinary clinic was actually a city hall. A neighbor eventually found Archer safe, preventing the scam from succeeding.
