Congress tries again on national preemptive data privacy law
""This bill establishes clear, enforceable protections so that Americans remain in charge of their own data and companies are held accountable for its safe keeping," said Republican Reps. Brett Guthrie and John Joyce."
"Under the new bill, consumers have the right to know when their data is being collected and used, can access it and delete it, as well as opt out of targeted advertising, the sale of that data and other automated decisions."
House Republicans introduced two new bills aimed at creating a national data privacy standard, the SECURE Data Act and the GUARD Financial Data Act. These proposals would preempt existing state laws and establish new consumer rights regarding data collection, access, deletion, and targeted advertising. The Federal Trade Commission and state attorneys general would enforce these rights. Lawmakers emphasized the need for clear protections to ensure accountability for companies handling consumer data, following extensive consultations with various organizations.
