Jeffrey Bowie, a cybersecurity professional in Oklahoma City, faces charges for allegedly installing malware on a hospital PC. Under investigation since August 2024, the incident at St Anthony's Hospital involved Bowie using both staff and guest computers, ultimately leading to the discovery of spyware. Although a St Anthony's representative stated that the malware was swiftly eliminated and no patient data was accessed, Bowie admitted on LinkedIn to executing software that screenshot the staff computer every 20 minutes. He maintains the code was intended for a guest computer and disputes the report of his arrest.
Bowie claimed the code used for surveillance was written using PowerShell on a guest computer and routed to a remote host, thus he claims it wasn't a staff machine.
Immediately after the incident, St Anthony's Hospital assured that the malware infection was swiftly addressed, confirming that no patient information was compromised.
