Government hackers are leading the use of attributed zero-days, Google says | TechCrunch
Briefly

Google’s report shows a decline in zero-day exploits from 98 in 2023 to 75 in 2024, with 23 linked to government-backed hackers. Of these, 10 directly from state-sponsored groups, predominantly China and North Korea. The rise of spyware companies like NSO Group continues, with added concerns around their operational security and capability exposure. Experts note this growth will persist as long as government entities demand these services, leading to a continued cycle of new vendors entering the market regardless of public oversight or legal action.
"In instances where law enforcement action or public disclosure has pushed vendors out of business, we've seen new vendors arise to provide similar services," James Sadowski noted.
"Despite the fact that there were eight recorded cases of zero-days developed by spyware makers, those companies are investing more resources in operational security to prevent their capabilities being exposed," Clément Lecigne stated.
