TikTok Spies on Users Even if It Has Not Even Been Installed
""It's extremely intrusive," said Patrick Jackson, Chief Technology Officer at cybersecurity company Disconnect. "This expanded data sharing, when you do analysis of the actual pixel code, you see things that look really bad.""
""They're silently capturing that data without the site owner explicitly sharing that information with TikTok," Jackson explains further."
""This is verbatim the playbook that Google and Meta have used over the years," warns Peter Dolanjski, executive director of prod"
TikTok's web pixel collects detailed user-behavior data across many websites, enabling the platform to track people who have not installed the app. Some websites have transmitted sensitive health-related details, including cancer diagnoses, fertility information, and mental health crises, to TikTok via the pixel. The pixel can intercept data originally intended for other services, including Google, capturing that information without site owners explicitly sharing it. Website operators often remain unaware that visitor data is being captured. TikTok denies illicit collection and asserts transparency. Privacy experts estimate TikTok trackers appear on about five percent of top global websites.
